The 4th School on
High Energy Physics
Poster WEB site INDICO
The 4th School of High Energy Physics was held at the guest
house of Ain Shams University in Egypt (ASU) from 26 April to 1st May
2014.
A special students’
training session for practicing most advanced data analysis software was also
held at the British University in Egypt (BUE)
from 3 May to 5 May 2014. This annual school
on high-energy physics was organized under the auspices of the Academy of
Scientific
Research and Technology (ASRT, Egypt), the
Egypt Network for High Energy Physics
(ENHEP), the French National Center for Scientific
Research (CNRS), the Italian National
Institute for Nuclear Physics (INFN). The school was primarily conceived as
part of the dissemination
programme
of the Egypt Europe Network for Particle Physics (EENP2) which has the important mission of knowledge transfer and
training of
young Egyptian scientists in the field of high energy physics and
related technologies. More than 100 applications were submitted
for participation, among which 60 students
were selected from different nationalities, such as Egypt, Sudan, Algeria.
An intense programme
of lectures was accomplished spanning from the most recent theoretical models
(Standard Model and Super Symmetric
models) to recent experimental results from
the Large Hadron Collider operation at CERN. Emphasis was also given to
experimental methods
for data analysis and related technologies for
particle detection and advanced GRID computing.
A survey of possible
applications of particle physics methods and instruments for health and
environmental domains was finally discussed.
The lectures were
held by the most qualifies Egyptian researchers and by European experts from
outstanding research institutions.
In order to stimulate
active participation, special sessions were foreseen where students could
present and discuss their work.
Surprisingly, 14 oral presentations and 4
posters were submitted and discussed. The two most interesting presentations
were awarded a special
price consisting in a one month stage to
Europe to join research activities in the CMS experiment.
The school was
successful in attracting and stimulating Egyptian students to continue their formation and to build
bridges toward Europe
for high education completion and active
participation to research activities and experience.
The intense
participation of the students with
numerous questions during the lectures and fascinating off line discussions has
confirmed
the validity of such
approach for developing new knowledge and training new scientists to compete at
international level.
Although Egypt is facing difficult circumstances, the
school has proved that scientific climate in Egypt
retains its efficiency stronger than before.
Many appreciations
go to the local organizing committee who has taken care efficiently of
all minor details and made possible a smooth and
pleasant running of the school in the special
atmosphere of Cairo.
