Gauge invariance and background field method in the Wilson renormalization group formulation of gauge theories

Marisa Bonini

Abstract

We review the Wilson renormalization group formulation of gauge theories and recall how to recover the Slavnov-Taylor identity when the infrared cutoff is removed. Then we derive the Wilsonian effective action within the background field formalism. By introducing the background field into the regulator function one keeps explicit background gauge invariance. However BRS symmetry is broken and a fine tuning procedure is needed to restore the Slavnov-Taylor identity.
