String Effects in Lattice Gauge Theories

Michele Caselle

Abstract

We discuss the effective string model for the interquark potential in Lattice Gauge Theories. After a short introduction on the effective string theory we concentrate on the simplest possible realization, i.e. the free bosonic string model. We review its predictions for the finite size corrections to the interquark potential for various different geometries (Wilson loops, Polyakov loop correlators, interfaces...) and discuss their asymptotic behavior in the various regimes of physical interest. Then we compare them with some new Montecarlo data on the 3d gauge Ising model and with various sets of data recently appeared in the literature on the SU(2) and SU(3) LGT
