The forces between three static quarks

Philippe de Forcrand

Abstract

The force between a quark and antiquark has been studied extensively by numerical lattice simulations. The next simplest system is one of three quarks, i.e. a baryon. Are the interactions pairwise, or is there a three-body force? Two competing models, based on different confinement mechanisms, make slightly different predictions. Lattice Monte Carlo simulations using state-of-the-art variance reduction allow to distinguish between the two models. Additional insight is obtained from a study of the 3-state Potts model.
