Exact solution of the munoz-eaton model for protein folding

Alessandro Pelizzola

Abstract

The apparent overall simplicity of the two-state thermodynamics and kinetics of short, single domain proteins represents a challenge for the theorist, aiming to relate such behaviour to a microscopic description of the folding process. A simple microscopic model has been proposed by Eaton and coworkers to account for the experimental findings on simple kinetics/thermodynamics; here you will find the exact solution of that model, and some hints about the transfer matrix formalism we used to evaluate the partition function and any other equilibrium property. Two experimental examples are discussed: a beta-hairpin and protein CI-2.
