Symmetry breaking and roton-like spectra in noncommutative field theory

Paolo Castorina

Abstract

The relation between the symmetry breaking in non commutative cut-off field theories and the transition to inhomogeneous phases is discussed. The noncommutative dynamics can be regarded as an effective description of the mechanism which lead to the inhomogeneous phase transition an to the roton-like excitation spectrum. In particular, the typical infrared-ultraviolet mixing in noncommutative theories could capture the key dynamics responsible for the non-uniform background in trapped bosonic systems and fermionic condensates.
