Measuring interface tensions with a local observable

Philippe de Forcrand

Abstract

Many numerical methods have been proposed to measure interface tensions by Monte Carlo simulations. They normally require a sequence of simulations, which yield the free energy of an interface. To extract the interface tension from this free energy is a difficult task, because of the entropy contribution from translations of the interface. In contrast, I propose a method requiring a single simulation, which directly yields the interface tension, because the interface is pinned. The method is illustrated with examples from 2d and 3d Ising and Potts models, and 4d Yang-Mills gauge theories.
