QED_3 on a space-time lattice: compact versus non-compact formulation

Pietro Giudice

Abstract

QED in a three-dimensional space-time has attracted wide interest both as a candidate effective theory for high T_c superconductors and for the theoretical investigation of mechanisms of confinement in presence of matter fields. Since in both cases a non-perturbative approach is needed, the formulation of the theory on a space-time lattice is a convenient tool of analysis. According to the applications for which the theory is meant, compact or non-compact formulation of the lattice theory is more suitable. We show some preliminary Monte Carlo data of the chiral condensate and the monopole density in both formulations, compare them in the continuum limit and discuss some of their implications.
