J/psi absorption in heavy ion collisions

Abstract
I will discuss the absorption of J/psi by anormal sources, i.e., nuclear and hadronic matter, based on a recent calculation of the dissociation cross-sections by pseudoscalar and vector mesons. The role of the limiting (Hagedorn) hadron temperature is emphasized. For collisions ofincreasing centrality, under the assumption of a limiting hadron temperature around 170 MeV, normal sources do not account for the absorption observed by NA50 at SPS. On the other hand, the range of energy densities in the more central collisions agree with the scale foreseen for the melting by QGP of the higher charmonium states, which are the sources of a good fraction of J/psi.
