Deconfinement in QCD and in Nuclear Collisions

Abstract
I first review the states of matter and the corresponding critical behaviour predicted by QCD. Next, I discuss parton percolation as prerequisite for forming a thermal medium in nuclear collisions. Finally, I address the consequences of pre-equilibrium conditions on quark-gluon plasma formation and on the interpretation of observable signatures.
