Confinement and geometry: the t'Hooft tensor

Abstract

 

Experiment strongly indicates that confinement is due to symmetry. For geometrical reasons the dual excitations responsible for the deconfining transition must be monopoles, for any gauge group. The geometry of monopoles is analysed and the t'Hooft tensor is constructed for arbitrary gauge symmetry.
