Abstract

The effective electron mass generated through approximate chiral symmetry breaking in QED in a strong magnetic field is reliably calculated by solving the nonperturbative Schwinger-Dyson equations in a consistent truncation within the lowest Landau level approximation. We find that there is a few percent increase in the electron mass around $10^{15}$ G, the typical magnetic fields on the surface of young neutron stars.
