Expertise:

Planetek Hellas (PKH) is a company of the Planetek Group that since 1994 operates in the field of Science Data Exploitation, Software Development for the On Board and the Ground Segment, Earth Observation and INSPIRE compliant Spatial Data Infrastructures.

The company’s applications and solutions are developed within the most important European programs in the field of space related applications and integrated satellite systems for the management, analysis and sharing of scientific and Earth Observation data and information.

The expertise of PKH has led the company to strengthen specific skills related to:
  • On-board software
  • Science and earth observation data management and processing for both on-board and ground deployments
  • Data fusion procedures for Science/EO added value products and service deliveries.
Planetek Group participates also to the definition and implementation of software for space systems for space science missions (e.g., Solar Orbiter), and Earth Observation missions (e.g., Copernicus Hyperspectral Mission, Sentinel-10).

PKH has led the design, development and successful delivery of two scientific data exploitation systems:
  • Science Archive Publication System, which provides a Decisions Support System for the storage and analysis of scientific publications in the field of Cosmic exploration.
  • PLAAVI (Planck Legacy Archive Value Added Interfaces) consisting of a set of added-value web tools that permit scientists to perform remote processing on the Planck products, which reside physically in the online ESA archive hosted at the European Space Astronomy Centre (ESAC), in Madrid.
Maria Ieronymaki (female) has matured a relevant experience in scientific algorithms‘ optimization, engineering and implementation in the frame of several projects with the European Space Agency and European prime contractors. She contributed to the analysis of the huge amount of data collected by the Plank Mission in Beyond Planck (H2020 project) and PLAAVI (ESA). She has been working in the space domain, as a software engineer at Planetek Hellas since 2014 and before at Terma BV (Leiden, NL).

Michele Iacobellis (male) holds an MsC in Electronic Engineering. Since 2015 he is the Software Architect of the SpaceStream Unit at Planetek. His experience ranges from the design and implementation of SIL4 (CENELEC 50128/50129) software applications to data processing SW on-board satellites and in ground segments with a specific focus on high-performance computing and parallel processing of big data streams. He is leading GPU based algorithms improvement activities in Beyond Planck H2020 project.

List of relevant achievements:
  • Implementation in OpenCL and CUDA of the algorithms of Algebra Computation like Cholesky-Crout and Spherical Harmonic on GPU
  • Space BIT SW suite for image processing of SAR and Hyperspectral EO imagery with GPU
  • Engineering and implementation of CS algorithms for multispectral camera on a drone

Grants

PKH is currently involved in the Beyond Planck H2020 project (EC funding), with the aim to facilitate reproducibility of parallel algorithms, and to investigate techniques to replace expensive computing grid calculations with low cost local or remote GPU based environment by converting suitable code into low level representation for GPU execution.
