Purpose
TeRABIT (Terabit Network for Research and Academic Big Data in ITaly) aims to integrate and enhance three strategic Research Digital Infrastructures:
GARR-T, the network infrastructure supporting education and research in Italy.
PRACE-Italy, high-performance computing (HPC) infrastructure, the Italian node of the European PRACE infrastructure.
HPC-BD-AI, cloud-edge distributed computing infrastructure, capable of managing high-performance computing resources, big data and artificial intelligence applications.
GARR-T, PRACE-Italy and HPC-BD-AI are part of the strategic infrastructures identified by the Ministry of University and Research in the National Research Infrastructure Plan 2021-2027.
TeRABIT aims to upgrade the infrastructure and make it more accessible by the entire national research community.
The GARR-T high-capacity national network infrastructure will be upgraded with links at capacities up to Terabits per second, reaching geographic areas complementary to those already covered through other interventions, reducing the digital divide for the research community.
PRACE-Italy will upgrade its Tier-1 category HPC system, developing a hybrid architecture and connecting it to other EuroHPC Exascale centers such as Leonardo. Finally, HPC-BD-AI will create smaller HPC systems, available under the edge-computing paradigm.
